VARD is proud to announce a new contract with the UK’s largest shipowner-operator North Star, marking a significant milestone in the companies’ shared commitment to sustainable maritime innovation. The agreement covers the design and construction of two hybrid Service Operation Vessels (SOVs).

North Star has already contracted VARD for 2 CSOVs and 4 SOVs, in addition to two Vard Designs at an external yard. This contract marks the 9th and 10th offshore wind ships contracted with VARD.

North Star employs 1,400 crew and onshore personnel and owns the largest wholly UK-owned fleet engaged in the North Sea. The firm has committed to delivering 40 hybrid offshore wind ships by 2040 to meet the evolving demand of operations and maintenance (O&M) logistical support across the UK and Europe. Partners Group, one of the largest firms in the global private markets industry, acting on behalf of its clients, acquired North Star in 2022.

ALL-ROUND SOLUTION
Designed by Vard Design in Ålesund, Norway, these newly contracted vessels are based on the proven VARD 4 19 platform—an all-round solution tailored for offshore windfarm support. With a length of 87.5 meters and a beam of 19.5 meters, each vessel will feature a height-adjustable motion-compensated gangway with elevator system, a boat landing system, and accommodation for up to 120 personnel. The vessels are equipped with a battery hybrid system and ready for future conversion to operation on methanol, reflecting our shared ambition to lead the green transition in maritime operations.

– VARD has been a trusted partner to North Star for many years, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved together. With six vessels successfully delivered, two under construction, and now two more newbuilds underway, this long-standing collaboration continues to go from strength to strength. VARD’s professionalism, reliability, and on-time delivery has been a success factor for our business, says North Star CEO Gitte Gard Talmo.

– This partnership with North Star represents more than a contract—it’s a convergence of expertise and vision. Together, we are continuing to develop the offshore wind support industry, combining VARD’s shipbuilding excellence with North Star’s operational insight and commitment to sustainability, says CEO in VARD Cathrine Kristiseter Marti.

The SeaQ package from Vard Electro will deliver integrated systems for power, control, bridge, and communication—enabling smart, energy-efficient operations at sea.

Vard Interiors will contribute HVAC-R and interior concepts, ensuring comfort and functionality onboard.

PLEASED TO COLLABORATE
– We are pleased to collaborate yet again with North Star on this forward-looking project. These vessels are a testament to what’s possible when innovation meets purpose, says Runar Vågnes, SVP Sales and Marketing in VARD and responsible for the commercial process.

The first hull will be constructed at Vard Shipyards Romania -Braila, with final outfitting and delivery from one of VARD’s Norwegian shipyards. The delivery is scheduled for Q4 in 2027. The second vessel will be built and delivered from Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam. Delivery of the second vessels is scheduled for Q4 in 2028.
